Soaking - Vessel loading / Float ratio

Leather technicians appreciate that making high quality leather is not only a matter of election the right chemicals. Water, the type of drum, speed of agitation must be adjusted for optimum results. TFL's tanning experts take into consideration every individual tannery's production set-up when designing a process to meet local needs.

The correct loading and floating of any type of process vessel is important to obtaining the correct mechanical action and movement of the hides or skins within that vessel.

For soaking the loading should be such that free movement of the raw material is possible and there is no tendency to rolling in mixers or drums. In mixers and paddles the action can be seen clearly but in drums the loading needs to be observed after soaking when the stock no longer floats. All drum makers will supply guidelines on loading but these do not always take into account such things as the amount hair on some types of skin or the surface area of small skins processed in large loads. All these parameters can only be judged in the light of experience.
