Special factors to be observed when processing fresh hides

Processing fresh hides from the abattoir has many advantages. It can have several pitfalls too, as studies at BCT in Brighton / England have shown. TFL's special auxiliaries pay attention to the polymucosaccharides, which, if not removed, interfere with penetration of chemicals and spoil the leather quality.

The processing of fresh bovine hides has become standard practice in some tanneries and is the state of the art. The proportion of fresh hides processed is continually increasing, although certain natural limits impose themselves because of restricted storage capacity (distance from the slaughterhouse to the tannery, standby material held at the tannery, etc.).

Processing fresh hides above all offers advantages in terms of quality, quite apart from the aspect of environmental protection (no preserving salt). To fully exploit these benefits, certain special criteria must be borne in mind when compared with salted stock processing.

Storability: The hides should be processed as soon as possible after flaying. If this is not possible, the hides should be stored at approximately 5°C. Prior to this, term preservation (e.g. with ARACIT KL new). The amount of preserving agent used depends on the desired storage period (typical value: 0.1% ARACIT KL new/day), but should not exceed 7 days.
