The salting of hides and skins must be done with clean mineral salt. Salt from the sea water or reused dirty salt may contain halophilic bacteria, i.e. bacteria acclimatised to living in salt conditions. These bacteria are commonly noticed from the characteristics red or coloured patches on the flesh side of the hide or skin known as "red heat". This staining is a sign that halophilic bacterial action is taking place and some damage to the stock may be expected.
Good Practice: Process the stock as soon as possible with biocides from the ARACIT range.
