Wet salted hides or skins are low in moisture and if this raw material is left uncovered in dry ambient conditions it may dry out completely and this causes difficulty in soaking and subsequent liming. This often leads to such problems as loose or shrunken grain and general structural looseness, particularly in belly areas.
Over a period of time wet salted hides, when on pallets or piled, can dry out at the protruding edges or folds around the sides of the pile. This can result in lines or fold marks in the finished leathers caused either by scud remaining or by drawn grain along the fold mark.
The damage caused to the grain by folds drying out is difficult to rectify and the best that can be done is to soak as well as possible. This is best to achieve by soaking with PELLVIT enzymatic soaking agents and BORRON enzyme compatible surfactants.
